It's August, which is close enough to fall to start talking about colder weather.

Kiddos are starting back to school, Spirit Halloween is open for the season, and we're less than a month away from Labor Day. This is a weird time of the year. Some hang on to the season and embrace the Dog Days of Summer. Others jump right into Spooky Season and all things pumpkin.

Farmer's Almanac won't release their winter 2024-2025 forecast yet but they do have a forecast for when our first frost will be.

You Might Need A Warm Halloween Costume

The 'frost' is defined as a 'light freeze', meaning temps are 29 degrees to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This can kill any tender plants you have outside. And kill any dreams you had of wearing a cool (literally) Halloween costume.

At Rock Island Lock & Dam 15, they predict the first frost of the year will be October 17th. Iowa City is close, with a date of October 13th, just in time for chilly football season. Cedar Rapids is even earlier than that, with the first frost prediction date of October 7th.

There's only a 30% chance of a first fall frost occurring before or after these dates, so it's likely that those dates are when we'll see it.

Meanwhile, we have a couple of months before the first frost of the year hits. It's not too long before the days get shorter and our motivation to get anything done plummets so enjoy the teeshirts and sunlight while we have it!
