Former Iowa Football Players To Judge At Firefighter BBQ Contest
It only makes sense that a fire department would put on a Smoke Show BBQ Contest. If any flames get out of hand, at least there will be plenty of great Iowa volunteer firefighters there to put it out.
To help raise money for the department and to have some fun, the Goose Lake Fire Department in Goose Lake, Iowa is hosting its annual BBQ contest that everyone is invited to. There is a ticket price but to help out this volunteer fire department, it's all worth it. Plus, a few former Iowa Hawkeyes football players will be on hand to help judge the food.
The 6th annual Goose Lake Fire Department Smoke Show BBQ Contest is coming up on Saturday, June 15th, 2024. The food and fun begins at 3 p.m. at the Goose Lake City Park (200 Main St.) where a lot of delicious food will be found.
Several contestants will be competing in 3 categories, pork butt, pork belly, and chicken thighs, plus there will be a dessert category. There is a $20 entry fee that gets you 10 tickets for samples and 10 tickets to vote for people’s choice winner (while supplies last). The public sampling will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Trophies will be given to those who finish first place in each category and the Grand Champion will get $100. Judging the contestants this year are a few former Iowa Hawkeyes football players.
Levi and Landan Paulsen, Boone Myers, and Luke Empen will be in Goose Lake to judge the teams on their meats and desserts.
To finish off this fun event, the band Boots and Bibs will perform following the awards ceremony.
