Hawaiian Tourist Followed Her GPS Right Into The Ocean

A woman vacationing in Hawaii's trip had a traumatic turn after she followed her GPS straight into a harbor.

People Magazine said the tourists were on their way to a manta ray tour Kailua-Kona on Saturday when they ended up driving their Dodge Caravan rental right into the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor.

"I think they just must've taken their eyes off the road for a second," Christie Hutchinson, who witnessed the ordeal, told Hawaii News Now.

Hutchinson was just about to take her boat in from the harbor after a morning on the ocean with her husband and their friends, when they watched the minivan suddenly turn and drive down the boat ramp and into the water.

"I was just sitting there trying to seek shelter from the rain, and then the next thing, I saw a car drive directly past our boat straight into the harbor at a pretty decent speed," Hutchinson told Washington Post. Neither woman sustained injuries, and it's all with help from Hutchinson's friends springing into action as the vehicle sank further and further into the water.

The passenger climbed out of the window of the van, and Hutchinson's husband and friend helped pull the driver out of the sinking van.

The vehicle was fully underwater by the time emergency crews arrived later to tow it out, per Hawaii News Now.

"Usually GPS is pretty accurate in Hawaii," Samantha Tavares, an information specialist for Hawaii's Department of Transportation told the paper. "It's not exactly normal for that to happen."
