Ah yes, time for another holiday where we're not totally sure what's open or not.

This week is a great week to be lazy at home and watch football. It's also a good week to do some in-store returns of some not-quite-right stuff you got for the holidays. You may remember you need to run some post-holiday errands or get a craving for a specific snack while you're watching the college football bowl games. But is your destination even open on Tuesday or Wednesday?

NYE & NYD are two of the days that I can never seem to remember what's open or closed. Luckily, CNN, NBC Chicago, and USA Today have our backs. So before we get into what's open, here's what's not on New Year's Day:

  • Banks
  • Postal service
  • Costco
  • Sam's Club
  • Aldi
  • Walgreens

Most places, including Target and Walmart, are open on both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. But they and most retailers and restaurants have limited operating hours on NYE.

What's Open

  • Walmart (regular hours on NYE)
  • Target (close at 9:00 p.m. on NYE)
  • Home Depot (most will close at 6:00 p.m. on NYE)
  • Kohl's (9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on NYE and 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day)
  • Walgreens (regular hours on NYE, times vary on New Year's Day)
  • CVS (regular hours on NYE, times vary on New Year's Day)
  • TJMaxx, Marshall's, HomeGoods (all open 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on NYE)
  • Starbucks (hours vary by location)
  • Chick-fil-A (hours vary by location)
  • McDonald's (hours vary by location)

As you can tell, there's a lot of 'varies' there. If you do get a craving for a certain restaurant or want to go check out a store, call the location before you jump in your car and head out there.
