If You Hear Cannons At The Rock Island Arsenal This Week, This Is The Specific Reason Why
You may hear something that sounds like a bit more than a 'pew pew pew' this week.
If you've strolled around downtown Davenport before, you may have heard a few 'pop' sounds coming from the Rock Island Arsenal. I've never known what exactly it is but I always thought it was kinda cool, no matter what it was.
But this week, if you're around Arsenal Island, you'll probably hear cannons.
According to a release from the Rock Island Arsenal obtained by our pals at KWQC, there will be cannon fire Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, 3 volleys of cannon fire are planned for an event rehearsal.
Friday is that event. 11 volleys of cannon fire will go off as part of a promotional ceremony. The ceremony will be at Quarters 1 on the north side of the island.
The release doesn't say when exactly the cannons will go off during the day. So just be lowkey prepared for it anytime if you're in the downtown Quad Cities.
Meanwhile, after being closed for months, the new roundabout by the Government Bridge from Davenport is supposed to open on Friday, August 2nd. But the bridge itself isn't ready to open to cars yet, though walkers are welcome when the draw is closed.
The improved, over 120-year-old golf course on Arsenal Island is still set for a soft open this fall, according to WHBF's last check-in with the Arsenal. It originally closed 6 years ago because of a change of ownership and then soon after, the pandemic.
