You have a lot of options when you walk up to a donut counter.

We have one more food celebration to get through in November before Thanksgiving:

National Donut Day.

It is Wednesday, November 5th this year and it meant to celebrate all things donuts. Whether you like cake donuts, glazed, frosted, or sprinkled, it's a great excuse for you (or your boss) to pick up your favorite donut this week.

If you need help deciding on a flavor, you've got that too. Statistics from Google Trends over the last 12 months look at what donut flavors we're searching the most.

The study found that Iowa's favorite donut flavor are rainbow sprinkles.

And it would be very hard to go wrong with rainbow sprinkled donuts.

Meanwhile, Illinois' favorite donuts are chocolate frosted.

Combine the two and you get a chocolate frosted, rainbow sprinkled masterpiece. The list of optional flavors in the study includes:

  • apple cider
  • apple fritter
  • bear claw
  • blueberry cake
  • Boston cream
  • Buttermilk
  • Chocolate frosted
  • Chocolate glazed
  • Cronut
  • Donut holes
  • Glazed
  • Jelly
  • Maple bacon
  • Maple glazed
  • Old-fashioned
  • Powdered sugar
  • Pumpkin
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Strawberry frosted

Besides flavor, the other split was from whence the donuts come: it was between Dunkin' and Krispy Kreme (Kwik Star's donuts weren't counted in that race). Iowa (and 35 other states) went with Krispy Kreme while Illinois (and 14 other states) chose Dunkin'.

Meanwhile, America stayed fairly consistent with the top flavor. Nationally, glazed donuts were the favorite flavor, which were followed by powdered sugar donuts in 2nd place.
