Iowa College In Top 5 Most Dangerous U.S. College Campuses

School is back in session and students at one Iowa college need to be extra careful on campus this fall.

Colleges can easily get a reputation for having a dangerous campus, whether it's a school that parties heavily or if it's in a sketchy part of town or maybe it's just prone to a lot of crime.

The U.S. Department of Education Campus Safety and Security has data on reported violent crimes committed at different U.S. colleges and universities from the most recent year, and you can even see the stats specifically per 1,000 students at these schools.

The Violent Crimes

Degree Choices did the legwork and ranked the most dangerous college campuses in the U.S. with those stats. They looked at institutions that had a minimum of 500 students with or without on-campus housing. The colleges that made their list have the highest number of violent crimes on campus (including campus-owned buildings) between 2019-2021. "Violent crimes" mean these 5 things:

• Rape
• Murder/non-negligent manslaughter
• Negligent manslaughter
• Robbery
• Aggravated assault

On the whole, 'forcible sex offenses' were the most common on-campus crime reported in 2019, followed up by burglaries.

The Most Dangerous Colleges

the University of Iowa ranks as the 5th Most Dangerous College Campus in the U.S.

There were 225 violent crimes reported on Iowa's campus between 2019-2021. Looking at violent crimes per 100,000 students, the Hawkeyes still rank #8.

Not a good look for Iowa but it's a good reminder for students to always be aware of your surroundings and to be smart and careful when you're letting loose on the weekends.
