Illinois Is Considering The Banning Of Some Glitter Products
If you're the type of person who likes to glitter up a bit before a night out, you may have to come up with a new way to glow.
There's a new bill being mulled over, HB 4175, that would prohibit the sale of personal care products that use nonbiodegradable glitter beginning in 2029.
The reason why is the concern over the pollution of water sources by microplastics (glitter being one), with 90% of samples from the Great Lakes containing the microplastics.
"Microplastics in personal care products are manufactured at a size that easily enters our waterways and our environment," state Rep. Kimberly DuBuclet (D-Chicago), the author of the bill, said in a statement. DuBuclet used to be the vice president of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.
The bill would prohibit the sale of glitter-based personal care like body paints and makeup, as well as hair products, but wouldn't touch the glitter sold for celebrations - so sending one of those glitter bombing envelopes to your old office isn't going to be out of the picture.
No states have banned the sale of glitter completely, but if the bill goes through, Illinois would be the third state to ban the sale of the glitter beauty products, joining California and New York.
The billl has been introduced and could pass in the spring session that ends in May.
