North Carolina is, without a doubt, one of the best places to grow up. You learn southern hospitality from birth, get to cheer for awesome college hoops, and get to make Waffle House runs at 3am with your friends. When you ask most people, they’ll tell you that where they grew up was the best, but have you ever wondered where the actual best place to be a teenager is?

Our friends at Motovo took the time to dig into all of the communities in the Tar Heel state and used the factors listed below.

1) examples set by adult population
2) community safety
3) quality of schools (all on the list rate above North Carolina average)

Using these, Motovo was able to determine the best place in state to raise teenagers.

After their research concluded, they settled on Chapel Hill/Carrboro as the best place in the state to have a family with high schoolers.

No surprises here, nestled into one the of state’s most prestigious secondary education institutions (and, at least this year, the state’s best basketball team), the education in this area is second to none. The school systems here boast an impressive 91% high school graduation rate and multiple high schools in the area being in the top 20 in college preparedness. The proximity to UNC-Chapel Hill also affords students opportunities outside the classroom with plenty of STEM focused extracurriculars.

Outside of the classroom, the adult population stays gainfully employed with 95% of them working white collar jobs in education, business or healthcare.
There is also a wealth of things to keep kids busy and out of trouble. Being a college town, there definitely could be a reputation of partying. While this is certainly true for the Tar Heels, the college provides a great opportunity to experience lectures, art, and people from a wide background. Many of the school’s offerings are opening to the public and students from the area can sometimes expect a discount for certain events (not into the Dean Dome, unfortunately).

If Chapel Hill isn’t quite your cup of tea, check out a quieter town Morrisville or Boiling Spring Lakes. Movoto ranks those cities as great, teenager-friendly towns as well.
