When I was a kid, I dreaded the days I'd open my Snoopy lunch box and find a cold cut sandwich. I wanted PB&J.

Now that I'm a grown-up (which some will say is debatable), nothing makes for the perfect lunch like a sub sandwich with flavorful meats on warm, fresh baked bread.

For deli sandwich fans like me, two new shops are opening soon in Davenport.

The Five Points intersection will be home to a new Firehouse Subs, while Jersey Mike's will soon be serving sandwiches in the Kimberly Crossing Center, beside Fresh Thyme Farmers Market on Kimberly Road.

The Firehouse Subs website claims that "people come back again and again because, unlike other sub places, we steam our meats and cheeses, releasing a rush of flavors, then stuff a serving that’s way over code on one of our toasted private-recipe sub rolls."  They have a little over 1,000 locations after 20 years in business.

Jersey Mike's locations can already be found throughout Illinois, with the nearest being in Peoria and Rockford. On their website, Jersey Mike's says the secret to their subs is a "red wine vinegar and an olive oil blend. It’s how a Jersey Mike’s sub gets its exquisite zing. It’s how bites get boosted, and a great sub becomes an even better one. The Juice adds that certain something extra. An exclamation. The kind of exclamation... you can eat."

I for one, look forward to putting both claims to the test. Heck, I may even need to make three or four visits before I come to a final assessment.
