Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on Friday, April 9 at the age of 99, according to an official announcement from Queen Elizabeth. The announcement from the Queen was made through the official Buckingham Palace website.

Prince Philip, who has been the Queen's husband for more than 70 years, was born June 10, 1921. He was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. Prince Philip became the Duke of Edinburgh and was given the style His Royal Highness before marrying Queen Elizabeth on November 20, 1947, according to internet sources.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth had four children:

Charles, Prince of Wales
Anne, Princess Royal
Prince Andrew, Duke of York
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex

Prince Charles is the heir the to throne and is assumed to become King after his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
