After 30 years of service, Marietta Ohio Police Officer Matt Hickey was looking forward to a quiet, normal retirement from the force.

Unfortunately, that's far from what's happening.

Hickey was paired with a K9 named Ajax three years ago, and since, Hickey has not only bonded with the dog, but the dog has become family to him.

When he decided to turn in his badge, Hickey wanted to buy Ajax from the force to officially join his family. He offered them $3,500 but was denied.

According to WBNS, the reasoning Hickey received was that Ajax is only three years old and could put in another five to six years of service. He is also technically property of the state.

While the city is only allowed to auction Ajax off to current or former police officers or someone that trains police K9s, there is always the possibility that Hickey may be outbid - severing ties with Ajax forever.

A GoFundMe campaign was started from people of Marietta, OH and others who heard about Hickey's wishes to adopt Ajax. So far, the campaign has raised over $50,000 - significantly more than the campaign's $3,500 goal.

You can help Hickey by donating to the Go Fund Me and help mans best friend stay with his man.
