This Wisconsin Town Was Named One Of The Hardest To Pronounce In America
Every state has a few towns that are hard to say but there are a few that just take the cake.
Whether it be a foreign influence or a Native American term, there are unique names across America. And they can be hard to say. Sometimes, there's even a divide among the state's locals on how to say a town name.
Illinois and Iowa both have town names that are difficult to say. Wisconsin might have them both beat.
Reader's Digest looked at the most difficult town names in America to pronounce and I'm not sure I could even say Wisconsin's if I tried to sound it out. It's more letters than several other states' names.
Wisconsin's Most Difficult Town To Pronounce
There's a lot of Native American influence on lake and town names in Wisconsin. And that's the case for this one. But it's a beautiful town.
It's Oconomowoc! It has a reputation of being a charming town, surrounded by lakes. As for saying the town's name, residents think that the reason it comes off as being difficult to pronounce is because there are so many O's in the name.
The name comes from the Potawatomi term for "Where the Waters Meet" and had a population of about 18,000 at the 2020 Census. It was incorporated as a city in 1865.
They have a few golden nuggets in their history. In 1907, resident Ole Evinrude invented the outboard boat motor. In 1939, the new movie "The Wizard of Oz" had it's premier in Oconomowoc.
Nowadays, many people from Chicago and surrounding areas have summer homes in Oconomowoc and it's a very popular summer town.
