Trailer Carrying Over 100 Pigs Spills Over On Iowa Highway
Is this the most quintessential Iowa problem?
Call it a "pig situation". An "oink oops".
About a week ago, on April 14th in Winneshiek County, Decorah News reports that around 6:22 p.m. there was a huge wreck on Iowa Highway 139, south of 313th Avenue.
It was a rollover crash that involved a 19-year-old man from Hubbard and resulted in "significant damage" to a livestock trailer that was carrying over 100 pigs.
Here's what happened: the trailer driver, Cooper Granzow, said that he was going south on 139 during the day but it was really rainy and wet. A northbound car accidentally crossed into his lane while they were going around a curve. Granzow said he then either had to choose between a head-on collision or going in the ditch.
So, he skidded into the ditch and his truck stayed upright until he hit a field driveway and the semi turned onto it's passenger side in a west ditch on Highway 139. Granzow was okay but the tractor and trailer sustained possibly totaling damage.
When it overturned, a lot of the pigs that were on the upper level of the trailer were sent through the roof.
Some pigs did survive the crash. They were picked up by services requested by Granzow. Law enforcement had to euthanize some pigs while Chatfield Brothers Repair helped clean up deceased pigs and to tow the trailer.
There's no word on exactly how many pigs were in the trailer to begin with and how many survived the crash.
