U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Coming Through Iowa On 4,000 Mile Journey
A patriotic and festive moment is coming to Iowa.
It's the time of the year for some really cool holiday happenings and one is coming up very soon. The U.S. Capitol didn't exactly get it's Christmas tree at a big store this year. According to the Des Moines Register, their 2024 tree is making the journey from Alaska to D.C. with a stop right here in the Midwest.
The Tree
This year's tree is nothing to sneeze at, it's an 80-foot Sitka spruce from the Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska.
It left for D.C. on October 26th from Wrangell, Alaska and is expected to arrive at the U.S. Capitol on November 22nd. It will be decorated with handmade ornaments made by Alaskans.
Where To See It
The tree will be stopping in Altoona on November 15th. You'll be able to see it at Altoona Bass Pro Shops (1000 Bass Pro Dr. NW) from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. In addition to seeing the tree, there will be photo ops with Santa, hot cocoa, and you can sign the banner that's traveling with the tree.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds you to be careful if you see the truck carrying the tree on the road. The truck driver will have blind spots and will have to make wide turns and longer stopping distances.
Can't make it to Altoona but still want to see the tree? You can follow the journey of the Capitol's Christmas Tree on it's website.
