UPDATE: University Of Iowa, Northern Iowa & Iowa State Cancel Spring Break
The University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, and Iowa State University have announced their updated schedules for students for the Spring 2021 semester. All 3 state school's plans don't include a Spring Break.
On Monday, the University of Iowa in Iowa City, the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and Iowa State University announced the schedule for students and staff for the 2021 spring semester.
According to a press release from the University of Iowa on Monday, the spring 2021 semester will begin on Monday, January 25, 2021 which is one week later than originally planned. They also said that there will be no spring break.
The change in the 2021 spring semester was made in consideration of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. The changes was also to maintain the same number of instruction days while starting one week later.
The University of Iowa spring 2021 semester will end on Friday, May 14, 2021. Professional programs may choose to maintain their current calendars. Because the spring 2021 semester will end as scheduled, the summer 2021 session will begin as scheduled on May 18, 2021.
The University of Northern Iowa is also cancelling spring break for UNI students. According to a social media post on Monday, officials from UNI said that not only are the changing their fall 2020 calendar to minimize the risks of COVID-19 but they are modifying their spring 2021 semester.
Their social media post laid out 3 key factors when it comes to the new spring schedule:
- Spring classes will begin on Monday, January 25, later than normally scheduled.
- Spring break will not be held.
- Final exams will be held Monday, May 3 to Friday, May 7.
The new spring 2021 semester start date, Monday, January 25, is 2 weeks later than the original start date.
Iowa State University announced on Monday that they too will not have a spring break next year. The spring 2021 semester will also begin two weeks later than planned.
ISU President Wendy Wintersteen announced in a letter today to the campus community that spring classes will begin Monday, January 25. The semester will end on Thursday, May 6. Classes will be held during spring break which was originally scheduled for March 15 through March 19.
