UPDATE: Yesterday, a wallaroo was spotted on the loose in Peru, Illinois, where it later led police on a chase before being caught.

A wallaroo is smaller than a kangaroo but bigger than a wallaby.

"About 1:15 this afternoon our 911 center started getting a lot of 911 calls from people that were literally reporting a kangaroo running down U.S. Route 6 in traffic," said Peru Police Chief Douglas Bernabei.

Police, firefighters, and neighbors worked together to catch the wallaroo.

"My biggest fear at that point was, we cannot allow this animal to get hit by a car, we just can't we can't allow that," Bernabei said. "So we're going to shut these roads down."

Wally, the walleroo, eventually found his way to the Illinois River, where he fell in the cold water.

Two fishermen who heard the shouting came over and saved him with a net.

Wally was taken to Bridgeview Animal Hospital, where he was so cold they couldn't register his temperature with on the thermometer.

ORIGINAL: Here in the Midwest you never know what you're going to see. In fact, not a day goes by that I'm not driving around and see something and think to myself, "Huh, I've never seen that before."

Well, let me take you to Peru, Illinois where a guy is driving and spots a wallaby jumping down the street. Yes, a wallabe. Not normal for around here, but just weird enough to fit in with the Midwest narrative.

I've been told that the owner was found and he has returned home to safety.
