Western Illinois City Launches ‘Snow Angels’ Program Amid Wintry Weather
We're definitely not done with the snow.
We've had our first really measurable snow of the season this week and more is on the docket for the weekend. It accumulates on our lawns, driveways, sidewalks, and every other inconvenient place it can find.
To help the elderly and unable, the city of Moline has launched a program to clear off all of that snow. It's called Snow Angels and it's volunteer-based.
Here's how it works: a volunteer signs up to shovel snow for someone who is unable to do it themselves. City staff with notify residents if they have a match with a volunteer and they will send the volunteer the address to shovel at. The 'snow angels' will get a text to start shoveling after a snowstorm, when there's been at least 2 inches of snow accumulation. If the snow is predicted to melt within 24 hours, the volunteer may not have to shovel.
The city doesn't allow payment or contact between residents or the snow angels. If you want to volunteer you have to be at least 18 years old and bring your own snow removal equipment. You also have to reapply annually.
On the residents side, it's important to note that the Snow Angels initiative is for Moline residents only. It's on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seniors (60+) and residents who have mobility or disability challenges may qualify, depending on how many 'snow angels' sign up.
You can see the full list of the Snow Angels initative rules and apply as either a resident or a volunteer on the city of Moline's website.
