Wisconsin Has The Second Best Capital To Call Home
Living in your state's capital could be an exciting thing. It's where many politicians from across the state live, they are typically highly populated, and it feels like sometimes there are more things to do than other cities in the state.
Sure, that's not true for every state, including Wisconsin and Illinois. But calling a state capital "home" isn't the best-case scenario in every state.
A new study has listed each state capital in the U.S. in order of best to worst capital to live in. Why did Madison land so high on this list? Which capital is number one? How did the capitals of Iowa and Illinois do? Let's take a look at the data.
Madison Named The Second Best Capital To Live In
The folks at WalletHub compared all 50 capitals across four key dimensions:
- Affordability
- Economic Well-Being
- Quality of Education & Health
- Quality of Life
This is what WalletHub said about Madison:
Madison, WI is the second-best state capital, and it has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. It also has the third-lowest foreclosure rate and one of the highest average credit scores in the nation (752 - excellent credit), which indicates that its residents are very stable financially.
If you’re a foodie, Madison is a good spot, ranking at the top of the country for the availability of affordable restaurants with at least 4.5 stars. Madison is a very healthy city, too, with residents boasting a relatively long life expectancy and nearly 90% of adults in good health. It has the fourth-highest health insurance coverage rate, too.
On top of that, Madison has relatively little crime, with the seventh-lowest violent crime rate and 11th-lowest property crime rate.

Not too bad, Madison!
Des Moines vs. Springfield
How did the capitals of Wisconsin's neighboring states do in this study?
WalletHub found Des Moines to be the 16th best state capital to live in. Iowa has one of, if not the most affordable housing market in the U.S.
Springfield has some work to do as it landed at #29.
