5 Summer Day Trips You Can Take From the Quad Cities
There's really nothing better than taking a summer road trip...Windows down, music cranked up, sun shining, and the warm breeze blowing through your hair. Yeah, road trip vacations are how the best summer memories are made. But if your budget doesn't allow for anything too far away, consider taking one of these day trips from the QC. The rules? The destination has to be two hours or under, since anything longer than that can be tough to drive round trip in a day. We've also made sure to include our favorite restaurants from each city, so you'll never go hungry on your day trip. Check out these spots the next time you're in the mood for taking a drive.
Galena, IL- around 60 miles, 1.5 hours
Galena is not only a haven for history buffs (Ulysses S. Grant did live there, after all), but it also boats some fantastic antique shops, restaurants, wineries, and golf courses. We're big fans of Procento's Pizzeria for lunch or dinner, and Embe for drinks. Take a trip up for lunch, shopping, and strolling up and down picturesque Main Street.
Iowa City, Iowa- around 50 miles, 54 minutes
Sure, Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa, but there's a lot more to the town than just the college. Downtown is filled with shops, restaurants, and during the summer, special events like festivals and the farmer's market. Plus, nearby Coraville has plenty of entertainment to offer, like the Coral Ridge Mall and the Iowa Children's Museum. If you feel like having a yummy brunch while in town, check out Bluebird Diner.
Galesburg, IL-around 40 miles, 1 hour
Galesburg is just a quick trip down 74, and has plenty for families to see and do. Discovery Depot Children's Museum, Galesburg Railroad Museum, and the Carl Sandburg State Historical site are must dos, while locals love Coney Island for hot dogs and glass bottle Cokes.
Sabula, Iowa- around 40 miles, 1 hour
Did you know that Iowa has an island? And it's a mere 40 miles north of the QC. Because of its location (surrounded by lakes and the Mississippi), Sabula is an ideal area for camping (if you feel like extending your trip) and water sports. There's a beach on the island, and rumor has it that hippie haven Bombfire Pizza is more than worth the trip.
Peoria, IL- around 90 miles, 1.5 hours
Peoria is the furthest distance away from the QC, but it's still easily drivable in a day. The city, which is home to Bradley University, is packed with activities for families, including the PlayHouse Children's Museum, Peoria Zoo, Riverfront Museum, and Luthy Botanical Garden. One World Cafe is the can't miss restaurant in the area.
