Smoke was seen for miles away as a building on Bettendorf's riverfront became fully engulfed in flames Saturday afternoon.

The owner was checking on the vacant building at 2117 State Street, when he saw smoke and flames.

A call came into the Bettendorf Fire Department at 1:52 p.m., with the first crew arriving on scene at 1:55 p.m.

23rd Street was closed south of State Street, as well as north and south bound railroad tracks near the building, for a short time as crews battled the fire.

According to WQAD, "[Fire crews] started an aggressive attack to the building so it wouldn't spread to other buildings around. The building was vacant at the time," Bettendorf Public Information Officer, Lauran Haldeman said.

The Bettendorf Fire Department was assisted by crews from Riverdale, Davenport, Moline, and the Rock Island Arsenal.

It took crews about 1 hour and 30 minutes to control the fire. No one was injured in the fire.
