Celebrate Earth Day By Lending A Hand At Park In Iowa
This Saturday, April 22, 2023, is Earth Day and a great day to show some appreciation for nature, plants, and our planet. There are so many ways to participate in Earth Day at home and in our communities.
The Davenport Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Davenport are giving residents one way to participate. They are looking for volunteers to lend a hand at Duck Creek Park to make sure the local ecosystem is ready to thrive this spring and summer.
The City of Davenport and the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department are asking for residents to volunteer a little bit of their time on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd. The cleanup will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and volunteers are asked to meet at Duck Creek Shelter #1, across from the playground.
This Saturday, come lend a hand and start your day off with a spring cleanup throughout Duck Creek Park and the woods. Not only will you be giving Duck Creek Park and the local plants a chance to thrive, but you'll be able to get more familiar with your local ecosystems.
The goal for city officials is to remove excess woody plants and early spring invasive plants from the forest understory. The reason it's important to remove those invasive plants is that non-native plants that establish themselves in local ecosystems out-compete and dislodge species that have evolved specifically to live there, according to nature.org.
For those planning on attending this cleanup at Duck Creek Park this Saturday, the City of Davenport and the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department say to wear long sleeves, long pants, and close-toed shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided. More details can be found here.
