An Illinois Bar Will Be Serving Up An $800 Mai Tai
You thought that $20 cocktail was expensive? A bar in Illinois is ready to challenge that.
Nothing can run up the tab on a brunch or night out quite like too many cocktails. But they're so yummy, whether you like sweet drinks, bitters, or spicy beverages, there's so many options for you to choose from with cocktails. Plus they're a fun, unique way for a bar to differentiate themselves by concocting signature drinks.
But according to NBC Chicago, one bar is really pushing that limit in the form of a beloved tropical cocktail.
I love Mai Tais. If you're not familiar with them, they're a delicious tropical cocktail consisting of rum, orange liqueur, lime juice, pineapple and orange juice, and orgeat syrup. It's sweet and fruity goodness.
According to Trader Vic's website, Victor Bergeron claims to have first made the drink in 1944 this way:
I took down a bottle of 17-year-old Jamaican J. Wray Nephew rum, added fresh lime, some Orange Curaçao from Holland, a dash of Rock Candy Syrup, and a dollop of French Orgeat, for its subtle flavor. A generous amount of shaved ice and vigorous shaking by hand produced the marriage I was after. Half the lime shell went in for color, I stuck in a branch of fresh mint, and gave two of them to Ham and Carrie Guild, friends from Tahiti, who were there that night.
The Bamboo Room, which is at Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago, is unveiling a new Mai Tai and holy smokes the price tag.
According to The Bamboo Room's website, coming soon will be their "Vintage Mai Tai", which consists of: 1940s Wray and Nephew 15-Year Old, 1940s Vintage Curaçao, Lime Juice, Cane Sugar, and Almond Orgeat.
The price tag on this vintage beverage is $800.
The release obtained by NBC Chicago says that the drink will be available in limited quantities, based on how much of the rare rum is in stock.
