After all of the presents are open, the lights get turned off, and toys have batteries in them, a lot of things get thrown in the garbage or the recycling bin to get disposed of. But what items should you recycle and which items must go right in the trash bin in Iowa and the Quad Cities?

Luckily, the Waste Commission of Scott County gives us a 'yes' and 'no' list of what can be recycled and what can't. Before you start throwing things away willy-nilly, check this list and dispose of items properly.

Holiday Recycling Tips

In a social media post, officials from the Waste Commission of Scott County gave some solid recycling tips when it comes to items that are recyclable and which items are just for the trash.

In the post, officials gave us a fun fact asking,

"Did you know that average household waste in the US increases by about 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day?"

That's a lot of waste. But not all is waste, some items are recyclable. According to officials, items that can be recycled include:

• Plain Wrapping Paper
• Cardboard boxes
• Wrapping paper tubes
• Paper gift and shopping bags
• Tissue paper
• Greeting cards and envelopes (even photo cards)
• Newspapers, magazines, and catalogs
• Plastic bottles and jugs
• Glass bottles and jars
• Aluminum and steel cans
• Popcorn and cookie tins
