Local Rock Island fraternity Alpha Sigma Xi is hosting "Flip the District" on Oct. 21 from 11 am to 1 pm in The District of Rock Island, a charity event to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention.

The fundraiser will feature an attempt to break the world record for most people playing a game of "Flip Cup," set by the Chicago Cubs on June 3, 2016. The number to beat is 200.

“Flippy Cup” is a relay game consisting of two teams that include drinking water in a red plastic cup and flipping the cup upside down using one hand.

The free Oct. 21 event, in conjunction with M.D. Green's and Daiquiri Factory, will include a raffle and silent auction with prizes available from local businesses. T-shirts are available for $15 with proceeds donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Everyone wearing shirts will receive discounts at M.D. Green’s and Daiquiri Factory on the day of the event.

Alpha Sigma Xi was founded in 1990 on non-hazing principles and diversity, according to an event news release. Established upon the ideals to promote brotherhood, encourage responsible citizenship in the college and local communities, and provide service to others, the members of Alpha Sigma Xi hope to raise awareness and funds for this cause. Fraternity member Josh Hennen is organizing the fundraiser with fraternity chapter president Paul Samatas and service chairman Ranzy Collins.

Recently, an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Xi, a chapter from a local college, lost her life to suicide, Mr. Hennen said. For their own reasons, the college has asked not to be named and is not affiliated with the event, he said.

Raffle prizes include gift cards, Mallards tickets, concert tickets, and a 50/50 split of the raffle pot. A silent auction will sell a slightly-used EDP LTD electric guitar.
