It's scam time again and MidAmerican Energy is warning customers to not fall victim.

According to a QC Times article, several customers have been targeted over the phone by scammers who are posing as utility employees and threatening to cut off power unless the customer makes a payment over the phone with a prepaid debit card.

MidAmerican Energy reps say, customers receiving these calls should hang up immediately.

The scammers are using sophisticated methods including spoofing caller identification to make the call appear it is coming from MidAmerican. They also are requiring customers to make an immediate payment using a prepaid (Green Dot) card.

The scammers are impersonating energy auditors to get inside homes or businesses, and they are intimidating customers by showing up at their front doors or claiming a crew is on its way to disconnect service.

The callers also are claiming there is an electrical or natural gas issue with equipment inside or outside the house, and requesting immediate payment.

Customers who receive these calls or get visits by someone impersonating energy employees should report the scam to local police.

Customers can check the status of their account by going online to midamericanenergy.com or by calling MidAmiercan Energy at 888-427-5632.
