If you too are headed (or staying) to a house with doggos in it, you probably want them to have a seat at the Thanksgiving table, but be careful what you feed them.

I'm headed to a house that will have at least 2 pups at it. There will be food galore and I'm sure both of the dogs will be interested in what's on the menu. My family are all experienced pet parents and we love giving the dogs a snack when we're having a feast. But you have to pay attention to what you feed them.

What They Can Have

According to the American Kennel Club, pups are fine to have these Thanksgiving staples:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Potatoes (no butter, sour cream, or salt)
  • Apples
  • Turkey meat
  • Green beans
  • Plain peas
  • Pumpkin (not the pre-spiced pie mix)
  • frozen yogurt (not really a Turkey Day staple but okay)

Don't Feed The Dog These

  • Turkey bones/skin
  • Stuffing
  • Casseroles
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Creamed peas
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol (duh?)
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Onions, scallions, garlic
  • Ham
  • Yeast dough
  • Fatty foods
  • Foods containing spices

I noticed that pretty much everything on the list of don't's won't have leftovers enough to give to the pups in my house anyway. But if you have dogs, you are more than aware that they'll be hanging around the table already. Just be smart about what you reach to give them off of your plate.

If your pet does get sick over Thanksgiving, you can call the Pet Poison Helpline and/or check on your vet's holiday/emergency hours.
