Iowa iPhone Users Can Now Add Drivers License To Apple Wallet
If you're like me you use your Apple Wallet a lot. I don't mind telling you that because even if you stole my phone, you need my face so if you're cool with giving me The Silence of the Lambs treatment, shoot for the stars.
Sorry, it's almost Halloween and those are the weird thoughts in my head.
Anyway, if you're an iPhone owner and know how to use your Apple Wallet fairly proficiently, you'll like this news. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) has announced you can now add your ID/Driver's License to your Apple Wallet. They've had an app for quite some time now, but having your ID just two clicks away is going to make life easier... eventually.
Do You Have The Iowa Mobile ID App?
Back in November of 2023, officials from the Iowa Department of Transportation announced that the new IA Mobile ID app was available for download on smartphones.
Iowa Mobile ID is a free digital version of your official driver’s license or ID, carried in an app on your smartphone. The mobile ID app is optional to download and acts as a companion to your physical ID but it does not replace it.
Any Iowa resident with a valid, legible driver’s license or state-issued photo ID is eligible. Iowa Mobile ID can currently be used with:
- Android phones (Android 7 or newer); or
- iPhones (iOS 13 or newer)
- You cannot use a jailbroken/rooted smartphone or a device where the software has been manipulated to remove manufacturer restrictions and limitations.
To enroll in Iowa Mobile ID, you will need your physical card. The temporary paper driver’s license or ID cannot be used for enrollment. Once enrolled, your mobile ID can be used at participating locations.
As Iowa Mobile ID does a very thorough security review during enrollment, the app may ask you to take your selfie or scan your ID more than once. See tips for assistance.
Get Your Iowa ID In Your Apple Wallet
On Wednesday, Iowa DOt officials announced that Iowans will now have the option to securely add their Iowa driver’s license or ID to Apple Wallet on their iPhone and Apple Watch. Today, users can present their ID in Apple Wallet in person at select TSA checkpoints, including the Des Moines and Eastern Iowa Airports, businesses and venues, in addition to Apple Store locations across the U.S.
Users are also able to present their IDs in Wallet in select apps as well.
Businesses and organizations are able to accept ID in Apple Wallet using iOS apps such as Tap2iD Mobile, VeriScan, and Mobile ID Verify, for in-person age verification. These apps leverage Apple’s ID Verifier API to securely and privately accept mobile driver’s licenses and ID cards — right on iPhone, no additional hardware is needed.
Adding an ID in Apple Wallet
Adding a license or state ID to Apple Wallet can be done in a few easy steps, according to officials. Residents can tap the Add (+) button at the top of the screen in Wallet on their iPhone, select “Driver’s License or State ID,” and follow the onscreen instructions to start the setup and verification process.

Who Accepts Iowa Mobile IDs?
Surprisingly, a decent number of Iowa businesses and two Iowa airports already accept Iowa Mobile IDs. Technically, no businesses in the Quad Cities do so yet, but it's super simple for your business to get started.
All businesses are eligible to accept Iowa Mobile ID. To do age verification, the process can be as simple as downloading the Iowa ABD Age to Purchase app. For more information on how to verify with Iowa Mobile ID, see the Mobile ID for Business and Organizations page.
The Eastern Iowa Airpot (CID) and the Des Moines International Airport (DSM) both accept Iowa Mobile IDs.
Not all businesses are able to verify mobile IDs yet, so you should still keep your physical ID as a backup.
