Iowa Is In The Top 20 Fattest States In America

We are about to load up on delicious and unhealthy foods on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even though we all probably indulge a little too much during the holidays, some states have a high percentage of people who are overweight and obese than other states. A new study shows that Iowa is in the top 20 states with the most overweight and obese population.

A new study has come out from WalletHub giving us their list of 2022’s Most Overweight & Obese States in America.

In order to determine the most overweight and obese states in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions:

Obesity & Overweight Prevalence
Health Consequences
Food & Fitness

WalletHub then evaluated those dimensions using 31 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most overweight state.

After doing a bunch of math we can't do, WalletHub determined each state and the District’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score. That gave WalletHub its list of 2022’s Most Overweight & Obese States in America and Iowa made it into the top 20.

WalletHub found that Iowa is the 16th most overweight and obese state in the U.S. Iowa's overall score was 60.10 and here is how Iowa ranked in the three key dimensions to get them to 16th:

Obesity & Overweight Prevalence - 15th
Health Consequences - 19th
Food & Fitness - 33rd

How did Illinois favor? WalletHub found that Illinois is the 23rd more overweight and obese state in the Union. Illinois' overall score was 56.73 and here is how Illinois ranked in the three key dimensions:

Health Consequences - 41st
Food & Fitness - 12th

Looking strictly at obesity, the state of Iowa came in 13th, and Illinois came in at 23rd again, according to this map from WalletHub:

The most overweight and obese state in America is West Virginia, and the least overweight and obese state is Colorado.

Deep dish pizza in Illinois and loose meat sandwiches, a.k.a. sloppy joes or maid-rites, definitely will make that scale go up.
