No Jail Time in Illinois for Marijuana

Could this be a step closer to legalization?

A new law in Illinois went into effect immediately today that decriminalizes marijuana. Possession of marijuana in small amounts will no longer be punishable with jail time. Fines will be given instead, between $100-$200.

According to WQAD.com,

The governor’s signature makes Illinois the 17th state — and the third largest — to treat possession of marijuana in small amounts as a civil offense rather than a criminal one.

Illinois State Police warn that possession without a medical marijuana card is still illegal and driving under the influence can still get you arrested and prosecuted.
