Earlier this month, we told you that Hy-Vee announced it will be closing select stores in Iowa. One of those locations includes the store at 3019 Rockingham Rd. in Davenport.

Although the Iowa-based grocery store will be closing that Davenport location along with stores in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo, store officials say they have a plan in place to help customers affected. This includes giving customers near the closing store free transportation, and free pharmacy and grocery delivery. While it won't bring back the need for a grocery store in those areas right away, it's at least a solution to the problem.

The Hy-Vee location at Rockingham Road has not met the financial expectations of Hy-Vee over the past several years, according to a spokesperson. Rockingham Road Hy-Vee will be offered a position at another area Hy-Vee store and they will keep their same pay and benefits.

If you use the pharmacy at the Rockingham Road Hy-Vee, your prescriptions will be automatically transferred to another local Hy-Vee pharmacy, most likely the West Locust Hy-Vee. But what about those that don't have transportation to get to that Hy-Vee? The grocery store has some solutions.

Hy-Vee To Offer Free Transportation, Delivery To Affected Customers

Hy-Vee announced that they have 5 solutions to help those severely impacted by the three store closures in Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo. According to The Gazette, they include:

  1. Free transportation: Hy-Vee will provide a free shuttle from each impacted store location to the Hy-Vee store where pharmacy prescriptions will be transferred. This will allow customers to get groceries and receive their medications at the West Locust Hy-Vee in Davenport, Oakland Road Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids, and Crossroads Hy-Vee in Waterloo. The shuttle service will run three days a week for four hours at a time to accommodate various schedules. The free shuttles will run on a designated schedule starting the week of June 24 through Sept. 1. At that time, Hy-Vee will reevaluate their use by the community. More information will be shared once Hy-Vee finalize routes with our transportation partners.
  2. Free grocery delivery: Hy-Vee will provide free grocery delivery to all residents within a one-mile radius of each store that is closing for one year when they sign up for the service. Sign-up will begin June 10, and more details will be announced closer to that date. Free delivery will continue through June 23, 2025. A minimum order of $24.95 will be required.
  3. Continuation of free pharmacy delivery: Hy-Vee will continue to provide free pharmacy delivery to Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo residents. Hy-Vee has done this for the past several years for all residents in these cities and will continue to do so.
  4. No lease restrictions: Hy-Vee is actively working with landlords to try to fill the spaces at each location so that the property does not stay vacant once Hy-Vee closes its store. We are not placing a “use restriction” on any of these three locations.
  5. Increased food bank assistance: Hy-Vee is partnering with the River Bend Food Bank in Davenport, HACAP in Cedar Rapids, and Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo to fund, supply and staff several food distribution events in July and August to help local families in need while school is out for the summer. In Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Hy-Vee will support a mobile food pantry in the parking lot of the First Avenue Hy-Vee and Hy-Vee on Rockingham Road twice a month. Notification for the events will be provided to neighborhoods surrounding each location in late June. In Waterloo, additional protein, like meat and peanut butter, will be donated by Hy-Vee to the food bank to assist families in need since a mobile unit is not available at this location.

Even with the closure of the Rockingham Road store, Davenport still has four Hy-Vee locations. There's the one on 53rd, 2 of them on Kimberly, and the one on West Locust. There's also the one in Bettendorf on Devils Glen.

Meanwhile, the last day for the Rockingham Road Hy-Vee (actual address is 3019 Rockingham Road) will be June 23rd, with the store closing it's doors for good at 6:00 p.m.
