The Best & Worst Days For Iowans To Travel Around Thanksgiving This Year
Thanksgiving may be late this year but it will still be full of traffic.
Turkey Day is only a few weeks away and at this point (if you haven't submitted your PTO), you might be trying to figure out when to head out to see the fams. That is, unless you're hosting this year, in which case have fun cleaning the baseboards and best of luck to you.
We're pretty much out of the window of getting good deals on domestic Thanksgiving flights by this point but there's still a good and a bad time to either fly or drive.
When Not To Fly
USA Today says that normally the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is full of flyers but the Tuesday this year will probably be busy.
Sunday, Dec. 1st will be the most popular day to fly back and it's actually the most expensive travel day for the holiday: flights are 45% more on average in domestic airfare.
When Not To Drive
Blacklane says that the worst times to drive for Thanksgiving travel are also the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., and Black Friday between 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
When To Travel
NerdWallet recommends leaving on:
- Saturday before Thanksgiving (the best option)
- Monday before
- Thanksgiving Day
They recommend coming back on:
- Wednesday in week after
- Tuesday in week after
- Black Friday
