So far, we've brought you news about shortages of aluminum cans, toilet paper, bidets, and even frozen pizza. Now, nearly 6 months into the pandemic, experts are saying the pepperoni supply is starting to dry up.

Pizza shops in New York say they're paying higher prices for pepperoni, and the amount they're able to get seems to be dwindling. Restaurants from NYC to South Dakota say they've seen price increases on the meat, some even saying the price has doubled.

R-Pizza in South Dakota told Bloomberg the prices forced them to change suppliers for the first time in 9 years. Apparently, there are two reasons for the shortage.

The first is that pork producers have had to battle with having reduced numbers of workers since the pandemic started. Pepperoni is one of the more complicated meats to make, so with less workers, suppliers have had to scale back quantities.

A second issue is carried over from the lockdowns. Pizza deliveries, as well as frozen pizza purchases have skyrocketed ever since.

So far, the price increases haven't hurt big chains like Pizza Hut or Dominos, because they get their ingredients through a long term contract.

Matthew Hyland, the owner of "Emily" in New York City, said his restaurant won't raise the cost of their pizza.

“It’s an American right to have pepperoni on pizza. Pepperoni is such a huge part of pizza it’s important to us that we keep it accessible.”
