Cookies are really their own food group this time of the year.

Christmas cookies were my breakfast this morning and for this time of the year, that's perfectly fine. Offices are having cookie swaps. People are test-trying new cookie recipes. Cookies are absolutely everywhere right now.

A survey found that 71% of people are buying cookies for the holiday while 61% of people prefer to bake them. So what kind are we making? Google Trends looked at it state by state.

These stats were based off of searches in the week of December 10th-17th. So a good time for pre-Christmas planning. Iowa's favorite cookie is a staple: chocolate crinkle. While the powdered sugar roll can make it kinda messy, it's a good go-to for parties and cookie swaps.

Illinois, meanwhile, is going all in. Their favorite cookie is a Christmas kitchen sink cookie. They're one of only a few states that looked this recipe up, but basically it's a bunch of random ingredients: pretzels, potato chips, M&M's, sprinkles, etc. all in one cookie. It becomes 'Christmas' when the M&M's are red and green and the sprinkles are festive.

The most popular cookie searches were: Italian Christmas Cookies (my breakfast this morning, 10/10 recommend), Buche de Noel (kinda like a swiss roll, chocolate rugelach shaped like a yule log), and Snowball, Christmas Crack, and Pistachio.

Google's other great find from this Christmas season is that a lot of people have searched "how to fix" Christmas decorations. So you weren't alone in the Great Christmas Lights Struggle.
