United Way Quad Cities needs volunteers to read to local kiddos.

United Way QC began their Read United program a year ago but they're looking for 200 volunteers for the weekly youth literacy program, according to our pals at KWQC.

What It Is

You'll pair up one-on-one with an elementary school student in either Scott or Rock Island counties who is struggling to read. You'll read with the student for 30 minutes to help prevent them from falling behind in school.

Ready To Help The Littles?

Sign up to read with the kiddos at readunitedqc.org. Sign up by March 10th. If you think it will conflict with your busy schedule, here's some good news: you have say in when you volunteer. When you sign up, you can choose from 26 schools participating to figure out which one best fits into your schedule.

To volunteer, you need to be at least 18, pass a background check, and complete a 30-minute training that's held virtually.

United Way Quad Cities Chief Strategy Officer, Angela Snyder, told KWQC:

In early 2022, we were worried. As a result of the COVID learning disruption, reading proficiency rates had fallen from about two-thirds of third-grade students reading on grade level to 30%. But the fact is, more than 875 caring people - over 500 in the first six months of the program - have made time from their busy schedules to meet with a student and help them grow. Words cannot describe how proud that makes me for the Quad Cities.
