When 10 million gallons of water is pumped out of a lock and dam on the Mississippi River, it allows a unique perspective. Our news partner WQAD sent reporter Chris Minor to Fulton to see Lock and Dam 13 drained and empty.

The process is called dewatering and it happens every 20 years. The Corp of Engineers pumped 10 million gallons of water out of the Lock and Dam to be able to inspect the structure and do any necessary repairs. According to WQAD the lock and dam system up and down the river is about 80 years old, and their original life expectancy was 50. That was boosted with some enhancements to 75 years old, but the fact is, the aging infrastructure needs attention and funds in the budget.
