A QC Newcomer’s Hot, Fresh Take on Quad Cities Pizza
I live my life with abandon and I will absolutely try any food. Today, that includes Quad City-style pizza.
Per your suggestions on Instagram and my coworkers thoughts on the best places for QC pizza, I went to Harris Pizza and Happy Joe's to get a vibe on QC pizza. At Harris Pizza, I had the taco pizza and at Happy Joe's, I had the extra cheese. Harris gave me a large even though I bought a small (my coworkers were thrilled).
As I learned, QC pizza has malt in the crust, tomato sauce made with red chili flakes or cayenne, toppings under the cheese, and it's usually cut into strips. I had the square pizza in school lunches so the shape isn't that weird to me, but Harris and Happy Joe's came through with triangular shapes.
First up- Harris Pizza. Yums. I'm a fan of the thick crust style and I don't mind a chewier crust if the outside has a good snap. The taco meat in this pizza had such good flavor! Honestly after just one slice, because of the generous amount of toppings, I was full.
Second: Happy Joe's. Loved this one too! The cheese drips off the slice in just the right way and the super cheesy flavor profile is so good.
I should note that the people working at both of these places were so nice! "Iowa nice" is definitely a thing.
Whitey's is the next QC staple I have to try. Where else should I go? Tell me on Insta: @sarahsonair.
