Burglary Suspect Dies While In Custody Of Illinois Police

More details have been released about a suspect who passed away while in custody with a police department in western Illinois. Earlier this morning, the suspect was arrested but later died at an area hospital.

A full investigation is underway and details about what was happening before the suspect's death have most of the details.

Illinois Police Get Called For Burglary in Progress

On September 6th, 2023 at 12:59 a.m., East Moline police officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 400 blk. of 17th Avenue.

A suspect matching the description given to the officers was located in the area and fled on a bicycle when an officer attempted to stop them. After a short chase, the suspect was apprehended.

Suspect Needs Immediate Medical Attention

Soon after, while still on scene, East Moline police officers noticed the suspect was having apparent medical issues and immediately began rendering aid while summoning emergency medical services, according to the press release.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and later passed away for unknown reasons at this time.

Investigation For In-Custody Death Underway

Per the East Moline Police Department's protocol involving an in-custody death, the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force was requested to investigate this incident. The Rock Island County Integrity Task Force is a multi-agency investigative group led by the Illinois State Police to fully and impartially investigate incidents such as these. No one from the East Moline Police Department will be involved in the investigation.

The name of the deceased will be released by the Rock Island County Coroner, Brian Gustafson, once notifications to the family have been made. The Rock Island County Integrity Task Force will handle all further media releases and requests during this investigation.
