For everyone who thinks 'Muscatine' is a little strange sounding or 'Okoboji' is hard to pronounce, I present to you Iowa's weirdest town name (according to Thrillist): What Cheer.

You may have heard of the former coal town, as it's only around 100 miles west of the Quad Cities. According to Wikipedia, the origin of What Cheer's unusual moniker is up for debate. After the original town name of 'Petersburg' was rejected by the post office, Joseph Andrews, a Civil War veteran, suggested the name, but it's not clear as to why. "What cheer with you" is an ancient English greeting, but there are also more elaborate theories that connect Andrews' hometown of Providence, Rhode Island to the small Iowa town.

In any case, What Cheer consistently lands on lists of unusual town names. Is it deserved? Well, it's certainly no Toad Suck, Arkansas or Satan's Kingdom, Massachusetts (yes, these are actual towns that made the list). Personally, I think What Cheer sounds welcoming, if anything.

As for Illinois' weirdest town name? Chicken Bristle, which is just south of Champaign. My personal favorite from the list has to be Frankenstein, Missouri. Check out the rest of the Weirdest Town Names in the US here.
