(UPDATED July 8, 4:52 p.m.)

Bomb-making materials were found at the home of Dallas gunman Micah Xavier Johnson.

Officials now believe that Johnson was the only gunman involved in the shooting.

(UPDATED July 8, 11:55 a.m.)

Police identify one shooter as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson, who served in Afghanistan. He had no prior criminal record.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Shooters killed five officers Thursday night during a protest in downtown Dallas on the recent shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile in a Twin Cities suburb.

Seven other officers and two civilians were also injured during the shooting.

According to CNN, police say that three are in custody, while another suspect is dead.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown says the suspect killed was involved in a standoff with police, the suspect saying he wanted to kill white people - especially white officers - and that he was upset by the recent police shootings.

The suspect was killed when authorities detonated a bomb.

"We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was," Brown said. "Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. The suspect is deceased as a result of detonating the bomb."

What we know:

  • 12 officers were shot by the snipers, according to Brown
  • Three suspects are in custody, but it is unclear how many are involved
  • One officer killed was a Dallas Rapid Transit Authority (DART) officer.
  • DART identified their officer as Brett Thompson, 43

President Obama reacted to the shooting from Warsaw, Poland Friday morning saying, "There's been a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement."

The Dallas shooting is the deadliest single incident for U.S. law enforcement since September 11, 2001.
