Iowa’s Weather Has Already Set A Record This Year
For once, wind is actually a valid elevator conversation.
Iowa isn't even in peak tornado season for 2025 yet (June & July, by standard definition) and we're already setting weather records. We didn't get a ton of snow dumped on us this winter, so what gives?
If you've been outside at all in the last couple of weeks, you probably have a good guess.
Yep, Iowa's windy spring start has set a record.
Specifically, it was the second windiest March on record for Iowa and a handful of other states. And for a large chunk of the country, it was the windiest March in 50 years.
Why We Have Been Blown Away To Oz
Wind isn't anything new for us. But this spring, the windy start has a few unique factors, according to MSN/Washington Post. Wind happens as the atmosphere tries to balance out pressure and temperature differences between air masses.
For the normal spring part of the science behind it, there's been a big temperature difference over short distances (these are called temperature gradients). That issue is made worse by winds sweeping up from the gulf.
For the unique part of it, since last year, there's been a heat wave over the western part of the gulf. So this year, when those winds moved up here, it had extra oomph to it.
According to the forecast from our friends at KWQC, wouldn't ya know it, the word 'windy' is in it.

So this means a few things: one, don't judge anyone's hair for the next few weeks, and two: talking about gusts in a boring small talk chat is actually relevant.
