Iowa, This Is How Long Thanksgiving Leftovers Will Keep In Your Fridge
Thanksgiving is coming in hot and luckily so is the food.
My family is small and we always make way too much food. To the point that we have at least 2 days worth of leftovers for all of us. We normally get the Hawaiian sweet rolls for leftover turkey & stuffing and make different things with the leftovers but the fact that we can't barrel through all of the food in one dinner is still the truth. There will always be leftovers and our fridge becomes a game of Tetris smushed with them.
The last thing any of us want is food poisoning from our Thanksgiving feast so how long will the food keep in the fridge?
How Long It Will Keep In The Fridge
Short answer: 4 days. According to the USDA, the Monday after Thanksgiving is the last day that you can safely eat Thanksgiving leftovers. If you want to keep them longer than 4 days, you'll need to freeze them.
Beware The "Danger Zone" (No Not The Kenny Loggins One)
As you're cooking, refrigerate perishable things that you cook within 2 hours of taking them out of the oven (or fridge). After two hours, the perishable food enters what the USDA calls the "danger zone", meaning bacteria can multiply and the food can become unsafe. Icky.
Reheat the leftovers to 165 degrees (if you care to check it with a thermometer. I just microwave it until there's no cold spots).
Also, use shallow containers for the leftovers if you have any. For one thing, it makes serving the leftovers easier.
Most of all, besides not getting yourself sick, don't burn down your house trying to cook the Thanksgiving feast. Best of luck on Turkey Day.
