Ya Maka My MUSIC

Music and dance have played a large role in Caribbean culture for centuries. The genre of music called reggae began with Jamaican immigrants and their influence on mainstream pop culture. In fact, Bob Marley is known as one of reggae’s greatest ambassadors to mainstream America. Reggae mixes elements from several genres, including dancehall, ska, calypso and jazz. And steel drums are an integral part of island music; they’re made by hammering steel onto oil barrels—creating beautiful tones when struck—and have been used in Caribbean music since at least 1917!
