Time to think winter.

(Knock on wood) it seems like we've had a light winter in terms of snow. But one thing that always makes dealing with snow more fun are the goofy names of cities' snowplows.

Just in time for Public Works Day on May 17th, the city of Bettendorf wants your suggestions in a Snowplow Naming Contest.

This isn't the first time Bettendorf has had a contest like this. According to KWQC, last year, the city had a naming contest for recycling trucks that got over 4,000 submissions.

Now, Bettendorf is getting 2 new snowplows that obviously need names. Submissions are open until April 17th, with winners being revealed at Public Works Day on May 17th (which is from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Bettendorf Public Works Annex).

This isn't the time to tenderly name something like your firstborn. If you Google 'snowplow naming ideas', some golden nuggets pop up (like Plowy McPlowface) but maybe remember these main points in a name:

  • Drift
  • Plow
  • Snow
  • Salt
  • Flurry
  • Blizzard
  • Thaw
  • Ice

You get the point, winter stuff. Maybe take the area into consideration too. Chicago did a similar snowplow naming contest and one that won made a reference to the city's history: Lollaplowlooza. Cities letting residents name their snowplows is becoming a more widespread thing and honestly, I love it.

On April 18th, Bettendorf will open up a poll for people to vote for their favorite snowplow names. You can submit your Pulitzer Prize-winning idea at the city of Bettendorf's website.
