6 Years Ago, An Illinois Student Was Hurt In Crowd-Surfing Incident, Memory Resets Every 2 Hours
Remember the movie "50 First Dates"?
Six years ago, on June 11th, 2019, student Riley Horner was seriously injured at an FFA event.
So much so that her memory resets every two hours and she doesn't have any short term memory, according to a Facebook page called 'Help Riley Remember' run by her mom. She's been waking up thinking it's June 11th, the day the incident happened.
In the incident in question, Riley was accidentally kicked in the head by a "crowd-surfer" at the FFA State Convention. She's had to deal with multiple seizures and a lot of hospital visits. The Kirkwood teen told WQAD at the time of the incident:
I'm not making memories. And I'm just like really scared.
At the time, Riley carried her notebooks and textbooks with her to all of her classes, as she couldn't remember where her locker was.
The Realest Comeback
Pretty sure Riley has had a much more productive 6 years than I have. Her mom posted a 6-years-ago update, and Riley's story has been incredible since. She was able to graduate high school, went to college and graduated with her Bachelor of Nursing degree, passed the NCLEX, and is now a Registered Nurse in Illinois.
She still contends with having no short-term memory but her mom says she's good about writing things down, color-coding, and making lists. Some days are harder for her memory-wise than others, says her mom.
She has had to travel many places, including Utah. She doesn't remember spending three weeks there, but she's headed back now to meet the doctors that saved her life.
