Alright, Davenport. Let's talk about the wrong crap you're flushing down your toilet. While it seems like no big deal to flush wipes, baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, or anything else that's not toilet paper, it honestly is a big deal. The stuff that isn't regular toilet paper or your bodily secretions really messes with the sewer systems.

Where is this article coming from? On Sunday, Davenport Public Works took to social media to remind residents what not to flush but throw away instead.

While Davenport Public Works made this post, let me remind you that this applies to all towns and cities throughout the Quad Cities and wherever else you might reside.

In the social media post, Davenport Public Works officials reminded residents that just because something can be flushed, doesn’t mean it should be. Items like "flushable" wipes, baby wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and other materials that get flushed down toilets are not easily, or not at all biodegradable.

Because the items listed above do not degrade so well, when they are flushed down the toilet, these items can really mess things. Those items can do the following things, according Davenport Public Works:

  • Get trapped
  • Cause sewer backups
  • Clog sewer system pumps, lift stations, and other wastewater treatment equipment

If this hasn't convinced you to toss and not flush, watch the video below.

Yeah, it's disgusting.

Even though this video is out of Vancouver, it's essentially the same thing that happens with all sewer systems as people empty flush down wipes and all other non-biodegradable materials.

Stop flushing wipes, Davenport! It's bad for the sewers.
