Eastern Iowa Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Jury Duty, Inmate Scams
New day, more scams.
At this point, you would think scammers would cool it, as more and more tactics are becoming well-known and people are getting smarter.
But Clinton County residents have been targeted by a couple of scams lately, so much so that the sheriff's office has put out warnings about them.
Scam 1: Venmo For A Wrist/Ankle Monitor
Basically, the scammer will call you, posing as a law enforcement agency, asking that you Venmo money to pay for a wrist or ankle monitor for an inmate.
Obviously, don't give them money if they ask for that.
Scam 2: Saying You Missed Jury Duty
This one I've heard of before and it's evidently still alive and well. The scammers recently got $1,200 out of a young woman in Clinton with this one, according to the sheriff's office. They called her, said she missed jury duty and she could either post a bond or face arrest, and as luck would have it, the girl did get a jury duty summons that the court later canceled.
The scammers' threats towards the woman got more and more intense until she folded and got the money. In the end, basically, the Fareway employees saw she was stressed out, they stepped in, and shut it down as she was depositing the money in a Bitcoin ATM.
The sheriff's office reminds you that they would never call you and ask for money.
Scammers are getting more and more creative all the time. If something seems sketchy to you, there's a good chance it is.
