I'm getting emotional about a sandwich shop, but it's more than just the sandwiches.

Quad Ciitans have loved and supported Hungry Hobo for as long as I can remember and I've personally patronized the Bettendorf Cumberland Square Hungry Hobo since before I was a teenager.

We've known for a few months now that Hungry Hobo was leaving Cumberland Square for a new location not far from where they are. A new Hobo complete with a drive-thru has been build just a block away at the intersection of Middle Road and Spruce Hills Drive in the Northwest Bank Tower parking lot in Bettendorf.

And now were here. The last day of business and the last sandwich to be served for the Cumberland Square restaurant will be Thursday, May 20. That location has been serving sandwiches, salads, soup and potatoes for the past 43 years.

How many times have I grabbed food there after a high school event, for a picnic, during work lunch break? I practically grew up at the Bettendorf Hobo and so did my girls. Every time we'd go to the Bettendorf 4th of July celebration, we'd grab a Hobo sandwich to-go. My favorite is the #2, ham, salami, cheese with lettuce, oil and vinegar with a tiny bit of mayo.

My oldest daughter who has lived in Michigan for the past ten years still needs to get her Hobo fix when she comes back to town.

It's weird to be attached to a sandwich shop especially since there are so many other Hobo restaurants in the Quad Cities, but somehow I'm going to miss this one. It's not even like I'll have to go far to make new memories. The new Hungry Hobo in Bettendorf is brand new and even has a drive-thru making it even more convenient to get a taco salad, baby Bo or cheesy potato.

The new location 2532 Middle Road - in front of the Northwest Bank- will be Monday, 5/24. According to their social media post, for the first few weeks it's curbside and drive-thru only as they get everyone up to speed. I'm sure my family and I will like the convenience of a drive-thru.

.

We'll just have to start creating new memories with a new Hungry Hobo.
