For years, Iowa was a leader in choosing America's next president but now that duty has shifted to another state.

According to PBS, on Friday, the Democratic National Committee voted to replace Iowa with South Carolina as the leadoff state in the presidential nominating calendar beginning in 2024.

The move, championed by President Biden, was intended "to better reflect the party's deeply diverse electorate." It still has to be approved by the DNC early next year but it's reported that it almost certainly will be.

Iowa has held the first-in-the-nation caucuses since 1972. Now the party has decided that New Hampshire and Nevada will be second in line to vote jointly after South Carolina's primary. After those two states will be the battleground states of Georgia and Michigan. These contests would likely happen next February.

Though South Carolina is replacing Iowa for the DNC first-in-the-nation, PBS reports that the state hasn't gone Democratic in a presidential race since 1976.

The DNC's new move isn't without pushback. PBS notes that Iowa and New Hampshire both have state laws that mandate them going before others and that they intend to abide by those, not the DNC decree. Nevada also isn't a fan of sharing the second-place slot with New Hampshire.

Scott Brennan, a rules committee member from Iowa, said:

Democrats cannot forget about entire groups of voters in the heart of the Midwest without doing significant damage to the party in newer generations.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee is keeping Iowa's caucus as their first in 2024.
