Update from the Humane Society of Scott County:

Following a terrific day of adoptions and foster applications, the Humane Society of Scott County is still in need. This is what they said in a social media post following yesterday's day of adoption they desperately needed:

"We pleaded for help, and the community answered with a lion’s roar.
We are blown away by the adopters, fosters, rescues, and donors that found their way to us.

Today, this community made history at the Humane Society of Scott County. This community saved lives. This community showed up. 26 dogs were adopted today. 6 dogs went to rescues and other shelters. 4 dogs went into foster homes. And tomorrow, another 5 dogs are scheduled to go home. But don’t be fooled, we still need your help."

Original Story:

This is unfortunately a heartbreaking story we have to write. Hopefully, this story reaches you and others with big hearts and room to adopt a pet. If it does, we hope you immediately make your way to the Humane Society of Scott County to adopt a pet today.

The animal shelter at 2802 W Central Park Ave. in Davenport is at max capacity, if not over that. They are struggling big time to take in more dogs and animals in hopes of being adopted. The Humane Society of Scott County needs the room so badly that euthanasia is being considered.

What can you do to help? Adopt or foster, it's as simple as that. We have the information for you to help but your help is needed immediately.

Humane Society of Scott County At Alarmingly Full Capacity

In a social media post on Wednesday, officials from the Humane Society of Scott County said that they will be open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30th, and are asking people to please stop in.

Officials say they have hit a breaking point within a matter of days and will have to make euthanasia decisions based on space beginning May 30th if the animal shelter does not have placement for at least 10 dogs by Thursday afternoon. They need additional dogs to put out of the shelter after the first 10 as well.

Officials say they just need the space and it doesn't matter which dogs leave. The Humane Society of Scott County has not euthanized for space in years and while it goes against what they believe in, they physically cannot house more dogs. They also can not stop bringing them in since we are the stray hold facility for the entire county.

Two police officers are waiting to bring in two dogs that have nowhere to go in the shelter because of the lack of space. The animal shelter has run out of space for dog crates. Dogs are in offices, in the dishwashing room, and in every room in the building.

How You Can Help

Those interested in adopting can view almost every dog in the Humane Society's care by either coming in and adopting or expressing interest in a pet. Priority will be given to those able to come as soon as possible and more dogs are arriving daily.

Humane Society officials ask that if you're missing your dog, come and look for them there any day of the week between 8-5 p.m. Other arrangements can be made if those hours don't work. They also have a lot of kittens and need fosters. If cats are more what you’re able to help with, you can apply to foster.

Adoption fees are only $22. If those wanting to adopt can't afford it, the Humane Society will waive it. If you're a reputable rescue or shelter and have room, email tbrandt@hssc.us immediately.

For those who can't adopt or foster but can make a monetary donation, please do that. Monetary donations are a huge help because they can be applied to medical care, food costs, staff time to help in this time of increased need, and more. You can help fulfill their Amazon wishlist and get the shelter wet kitten and cat food, and extra larger dog crates to send home with fosters.

Finally, be patient. The Humane Society of Scott County asks for your patience and kindness as they will be very busy. They are bringing in as many staff and volunteers as possible to try and help save lives.

To those who can help, we appreciate you doing so! Find more details here.

Iowa Stingray Home

This home is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It holds two tanks, both around 300 gallons each. They both contain different types of stingrays. As for right now, this project is just for fun, though the owners do hope to someday breed these rays.

It's been about a 6-month process getting all the supplies, tanks, and stingrays.
